CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL MURAL AND WALL-COVERINGS

Here are several views of a 10' x 28' mural (Kite Flyers at Mission Bay) just completed for the intensive neonatal care unit at Rady Children's Hospital.
See CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL UPLIFT (2 posts down -Feb. 28 -'10) for full story of wall-covering designs.

WALLCOVERINGS
The vinyl wall-coverings below are enlarged 6 times from the original watercolors and then applied as wall paper in patient rooms and corridors.
Each floor has a different theme:

SEASHORE AND TIDE-POOLS, 2nd floor
SUN, CLOUDS AND SKY, 3rd floor
OUTER SPACE, 4th floor

A 2 HOUR WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT CONDENSED INTO 2 MINUTES!

I have a documentary videographer, Mary Lynn Price, who has been filming aspects of my teaching and life for years. She just got a new type of camera and wanted to experiment with it. This is a 2 hour portrait painting condensed into 2 minutes. She surprised me by putting it on youtube. Have a chuckle; I did.

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL UPLIFT

Last year - '09, I was commissioned by Aesthetics Inc. to create 18 wall coverings for newly renovated Rady Children's Hospital. Their idea was to create fun style images that would add color, joy and outdoor life to a potentially sad, sterile environment. The original images are painted small so they will fit onto an 11x17" scan bed. The reproduced wall coverings will then be enlarged seven or eight times for impact. The originals are painted with transparent watercolors on Arches watercolor paper and non-water soluble ink pen. The ink line corrals the watercolors when they're enlarged. This particular technique is geared towards small children through adolescents.
Each patient room design will be reused 7 or 8 times in different rooms while the Corridor pieces will be used only once per location. This technique worked well for the San Diego Humane Society's Animal House (scroll along bottom of site), so I look forward to seeing how these will enlarge. I will also be doing a painted mural, but the wall is not ready yet. To be continued....

Each floor was given a theme from nature. I was assigned:

Second Floor - "Seashore"
Third Floor - "Sun & Sky"
Fourth Floor - "Outer Space"
